The influence of the chain extender (Joncryl) and initiator (DCP) on thermal, morphological and mechanical behaviour of Polylactide acid (PLA) / Boehmite (BA) nanocomposites prepared via batch melt mixing followed by compression molding were studied at various concentration . Scanning electron microscopy showed that the composites formed an island-sea kind of morphology that connotes poor interfacial bond between the phases. Transmission electron microscopy shown the agglomerations of BA particles when the Joncryl alone was added in the PLA matrix, whereas addition of both Joncryl and DCP revealed better dispersion. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that Joncryl, DCP as well as BA acted as nucleating agents in the PLA matrix due to the cold crystallization peak shift to the lower temperature. The stiffness of the blends was improved compared to the neat PLA.
