A novel small scale precision die drawing solid state orientation facility has been designed and constructed in the Polymer IRC Laboratories, and installed in the high resolution USAXS/SAXS/WAXD Xeuss 10m line in Changchun, with initial experiments on solid phase deformation of rectangular cross section polymer products. We combine microstructural analysis X-ray scattering skills with process engineering to provide new insights into process structuring mechanisms for property-enhanced (so added value) commercial PLAs and polyolefins aimed primarily at affordable healthcare technologies. We seek to elucidate factors affecting molecular and crystalline orientation during processing of these polymers, and to establish links between molecular parameters, processing conditions, hierarchical microstructures and the required properties in the final products, with an emphasis on enhanced materials for medical technologies. Initial results for polyolefins will be presented. In addition, an in-situ micro moulding facility is also being designed, to explore structure development in that process.
