Abstract:
Standard bead foams such as expanded polystyrene (EPS), expanded polyethylene (EPE) and expanded polypropylene (EPP) are commonly used for components requiring good insulating properties and high energy absorption at low cost. In recent years, the processing technology of bead foams progressed significantly, unlocking the access to new materials and application fields. New polymer types are introduced and provide access to further functionalities, such as biodegradation, flame retardancy, increased thermal stability and enhanced mechanical performance (e.g. improvements in energy absorption and impact resistance). The versatile properties of these novel bead foams open new application fields, revolutionizing both the industry and consumer market. This article highlights the enabling production technologies as well as future trends in materials and application.
