Both kaolin and halloysite belong to the kaolinite group of minerals having essentially similar chemical composition. Their external basal planes consist of SiO4 tetrahedral layers and their internal basal planes consist of Al2(OH)4 octahedral layer with available hydroxyl groups at the surface. Hence, external and internal layers can be selectively grafted by different kind of molecules. Especially, Si-OH can be grafted by both RSi(OH)3 and RP(O)(OH)2 molecules whereas Al-OH groups can only be grafted by RP(O)(OH)2 molecules. Particles of halloysite consist of tubes, rolls and cylinders, and have one nanometer dimension (tube diameter), whereas disc-like shapes are mainly expected for kaolin particles that only exhibit submicronic dimensions (a length of about 500nm). Kaolinites are natural and low cost materials with promising applications [1][2]. In the present works either halloysite nanotubes (HNT) or kaolin platelets were dispersed into polymer blends based on polyamides. In a first work, HNT is functionalized with SEBS-g-MA to improve the impact strength of PA11/SEBS blends [3]. In the second work, kaolin platelets are functionalized with either poly(styrene-co-(methacryloyloxy)methyl phosphonic acid) copolymer (P(S-co-MAPC1(OH)2)) or poly(styrene-co-3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) copolymer, (P(S-co-MPS)) to migrate to the interface of a co-continuous PS/PA6 blend. Hence, kaolinites are versatile particles with promising applications in polymer blends. In an ongoing project with a cable manufacturer, it is planned to use halloysite as a flame retardant carrier and selectively disperse those modified HNT into PE/EVA blends. [1] Y. Lvov, E.
