Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) based clay- nanocomposites were prepared by using different grades of SBR with different styrene contents (40%, 23%, 15%). The clay used to prepare the nanocomposites was also varied. The clay was modified with different amines of varying carbon chain length. The nanoclays (unmodified and modified) were characterized by X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectra(FTIR). The nanocomposites prepared were also characterized by XRD, FTIR and Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM). TEM study showed uniform filler distribution in nanometer level within the matrix. The mechanical properties were improved to a great extent on addition of the modified clay to the rubber matrix even at very low concentration. The improvements were greater with higher styrene content in rubber, longer amine chain length and increased filler loading upto an optimum value.
