Zinc oxide (ZnO) is used as an activator in rubber vulcanization, however its use has been criticized as its toxicity can cause serious impacts on water and soil, becoming a serious environmental problem. Motivated by this challenge this work aims to study the viability of replacing zinc oxide with magnesium oxide synthesized by green route in the activation of NBR rubber vulcanization. Magnesium oxide particles (green magnesium oxide) were produced by green route and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The rheological, thermal, mechanical, kinetic properties besides crosslinking density, and microscopy of the formulation composition obtained with green magnesium oxide were compared with the properties of the standard formulation using ZnO.
