Due to their chemical composition, thermosets are characterized by very good temperature and chemical resistance as well as high strength and stiffness. However, their use in technical products is limited compared to thermoplastic materials. Due to a complex cross-linking reaction and the changing viscosity, the material processing requires great know-how. Furthermore, in the current process simulation programs only inaccurate prediction models and material parameters for thermosetting materials exist. In own preliminary works several methods for the determination of material data sheets for the mould filling simulation of thermoset materials were developed. In the context of this contribution, it will be investigated whether the different curing behaviors of thermosets (e.g. polycondensation, polyaddition) has an influence on the quality of material characterization. Especially in case of polycondensation the associated formation of low-molecular reaction products, such as water and ammonia, may have an influence on the measurement of characteristic values. The aim of the paper is to compare the prediction quality of the mold filling simulation depending on the cross-linking reaction of phenolic resin (polycondensate) and epoxy resin (polyaddition). Finally, the simulations will be validated with real injection moulding tests of each polymer system.
