Polyethylene (PE) is a commonly used polymer in food and non-food products packaging due to its optical, barrier and mechanical properties. However, it makes up approximately 30% of the produced plastic waste by human by volume. One of the practical methods to reduce the life time of the PE is addition of biodegradable components to its matrix. In this work, the effect Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on chemical structure and mechanical properties of various PE blends containing thermoplastic Starch (TPS), Chitosan (for antibacterial proposes) as well as Polyethylene grafted Maleic Anhydride (PE-g-MA) as compatibilizer was investigated. According to the results of ATR-FTIR analysis, the “increase in Carbonyl index (CI) after UV exposure of the samples” rose from 76.47% for PE to 517% for PE-TPS, 5939.27% for compatibilized PE-TPS and 321.4% for PE-TPS-chitosan to 1384.1% for compatibilized PE-TPS-chitosan samples, indicating that addition of TPS and chitosan reduce the UV resistance of PE and addition of PE-g-MA not only improves the mechanical properties of the blends but also, significantly increases the UV degradation of the polyethylene blends.
