The photodegradation of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)(PBAT), poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate)( PBSA), and its nanocomposites based on various weight ratios of organically-modified layer zinc phenylphosphate (m-PPZn) were studied. An Ultraviolet radiation (UV) absorber hexadecylamine selected as organic modifier was successfully intercalated into the interlayer of PPZn by the simple chemical intercalation method to prepare m-PPZn as UV-shielding material. According to UV-Vis results, the m-PPZn has much stronger UV absorption capability than both pure PPZn and hexadecylamine. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) result of m-PPZn showed that the organically-modified process was effectively to expand the interlayer spacing. The XRD data of PBAT/m-PPZn and PBSA/m-PPZn nanocomposite indicated that the intercalated conformation was obtained. Samples were exposed to ultraviolet radiation in the laboratory for 3 weeks. The extent of degradation were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and color-difference meter. The result shows the higher m-PPZn content, the lower degradation of PBAT and PBSA composites after the pressure of UV irradiation. In addition, the PBAT/m-PPZn presented less yellowness as compared with the sample of PBAT. MMT test shows that both PBAT and PBSA composites have a potential of human-friendly material applications.
