LDPE/ scraps of Surlyn® ionomer blends, with compositions ranging from 0 to 100wt% of Surlyn® were obtained in a co-rotated twin screw extruder and the specimens were obtained by injection molding. The melt flow behavior of the blends was evaluated by melt flow index tests. The mechanical properties were characterized by tensile, flexural and impact tests and the thermal properties were analyzed by HDT tests. The increase in Surlyn® concentration incorporated in LDPE resulted in an increase in tensile and flexural strength as well as in tensile and flexural modulus, and a decrease in impact strength. No significant changes in melt flow index and HDT were observed. The results indicated that it is possible to reuse scraps of Surlyn® by mixing it with LDPE except for applications requiring high impact strength.
