Studies on rheology and modeling of extrusion of wood-polymer composites (WPC) are limited [1]. These highly filled, pseudoplastic and viscoelastic materials exhibit yield stress and wall slipping which is difficult to investigate both experimentally and theoretically. It is also difficult to study and model extrusion of WPC, i.e. the solid/melt flow, melting mechanisms etc.[2]. A global approach to modeling of this process has been presented which includes physical, rheological, mathematical and computational aspects of the issue. Various feeding modes have been considered, i.e. flood fed and starve fed conditions, and a novel computer model has been developed which allows to simulate the starve fed/flood fed extrusion of WPC. This global model (solid conveying, melting, melt flow, screw/die co-operation) allows to predict the process parameters, flow rate, power consumption, pressure/ temperature profiles, melting rate. Rheological models of Klein and power-law were used for flow modeling, Navier equation for slipping, and Bingham model for yield stress. Process simulations have been performed and validated experimentally for polypropylene/wood flour composites (PP/WF) of various wood flour content.
