“Fuzzy-fiber” decorated SiCf (Silicone carbide fibers) are strong candidates for ceramic fiber reinforced polymer composites. SiCf provides the excellent strength and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures where polymer composites often fail meanwhile “fuzzy-fiber” coating provides the optimum interface interaction between the polymer matrix and the ceramic fiber that leads to better mechanical properties and longer lifetime for the final composite. In addition to increased interface interactions due to high specific surface area, ∏-∏ interactions between the matrix polymer chain and BNNT (Boron nitride nanotube) ensures better wrapping of the ceramic fiber by the matrix. In this work, surfaces of SiCf were decorated with boron nitride nanotubes that have extraordinary thermal and mechanical properties, using growth vapor trapping-boron oxide chemical vapor deposition method. It is found that fuzzy fiber BNNT synthesis on the fibers does not hinder the mechanical strength of the SiC fibers at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was increased remarkably with the incorporation of fuzzy BNNT onto SiCf compared to neat SiCf.
