Substantial amount of petroleum based plastics are consumed during the manufacturing of small and large home appliances. Biopolymers such as Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) can be a low carbon footprint alternative to conventional plastics. However, due to their low mechanical properties, low hydrolytic stability and low temperature resistance, applications of these materials are mostly limited with certain applications such as packaging. In BIO4SELF project, eco-friendly and sustainable biopolymer composites were developed. PLA was compounded with additives and reinforcers to obtain materials with high stiffness and high impact resistance. In addition, hydrolysis stability of the materials was significantly improved for long – term usage. Tumble dryer parts such as process fan and baseboards were manufactured using the newly developed materials and their characterization tests are performed.
