Traditional polymer composites are limited by their poor fire-resistance, and inorganic materials are either brittle or difficult to be processed. In this study, a novel ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) composite with excellent fire-resistant properties was achieved based on ceramifiable and foaming technology. The results from the burning test show that the EVA composite exhibits significant improvement in fire resistance since crystalline phase formed at high temperatures. Gas evolution from the thermal decomposition of APP and EVA contributes to the formation of the porous structure in the ceramic residues. Formed porous ceramics have good thermally insulating properties, and they can prevent the increase of temperature on the unfired side. Mechanical properties of these composites before and after fired were also tested.
