Composites with thermoset matrix perform well in applications where thermal resistance and strength are required. No melting behaviour, high thermal resistance, relatively less changes in modulus / strength with the increase in temperature compared to TPs, and better creep properties can be considered as other advantages of thermosets. Despite all its advantages, it has been not possible to create fine details such as edge, connection point, etc., because of the difficulty in the welding and production of complex shapes in the manufacturing process of thermoset composites. Therefore, it is aimed to use overmolding technology to obtain hybrid composites with details such as edge, joints, etc. made from thermoplastic material.
In this study, thermoset composites with carbon fiber reinforcement, and epoxy resin as matrix were prepared. Afterwards, as thermoplastic layer, PA6 was overmolded onto the thermoset composite. The effect of peel-ply layer application and overmolding process conditions, on the interfacial adhesion between thermoset composite and thermoplastic layer was examined. For this purpose, 3-point bending test and dynamic mechanical analysis was performed with the hybrid composite specimens. Moreover, SEM was used to characterize the interface region.
