Poy ether imide(PEI) powder for SLS 3-D printing was developed and SLS 3-D printing was carried on using developed PEI powder to understand the layer formation by the sintering. It was found that Hausner ratio which shows the flow ability of PEI power is less than 1.2 and this confirms that developed PEI powder was good enough for the slicing process in SLS 3-D printing. The effect of CO2 laser scanning on the formation of sintered PEI powders was studied. The melting behavior of PEI powders was found in formed layer when X-Y scanner was used in SLS 3-D printing due to the increase of laser exposure time on powder. However, the sintering between polymer powders was dominated when Galvano scanner was applied with rapid laser scanning speed. As a result of melting behavior, the layer thickness increases and wide layer width was obtained in layer made by X-Y scanner. However, the laser scanning speed did not affected the density and dimensional stability of layer but the difference of flexural strength was noticed in formed layers having sintering and melting appearance of PEI powders. Glass bead was introduced to enhance the dimensional stability in the layer made by SLS 3-D printing. The effect of glass bead on the slicing process and physical properties of layer made by sintering process were also investigated. The enhancement of dimensional stability and increase of flexural strength were noticed in the layer made by PEI powder with glass bead.
