Thermoplastic Film enhancement via Crosslinking Chemistry and Electron Beam Irradiation

Thermoplastic properties (mechanical, thermal, chemical resistance for example) can be greatly enhanced by introducing crosslink networks into the polymer matrix. Some polymers like polyolefins can intrinsically be crosslinked by radiation sources such as UV, Electron Beam (EB) or Gamma. However, these often require high energy dosage which slows down production (line speeds are often bottle necked at the EB step). Herein, we will demonstrate how the properties of these thermoplastic materials can further be increased through the incorporation of (meth) acrylate chemistry. Introducing (meth) acrylate coagents into the thermoplastic resins allows for greater crosslinking density at lower energy dosages. This translates directly to improved properties at higher line speeds. In this presentation, we will focus on mechanical, thermal and surface property enhancements of films via EB curing. For film applications, this also allows for down gauging. Additionally, this approach can easily ybe applied to any thermoplastic material, application or process.
