Nowadays, thermoset prepregs including epoxy based ones has reached a certain scale in composite material technologies. These resins, offer higher thermal resistance, low process viscosity and superior adhesion to fiber. However, they have limited remolding ability once catalyzed and short shelf lives. Thus, the researchers lead to thermoplastic resin based composites where cited advantages are including infinite shelf life, lack of lengthy cure times, easier recyclability and high impact strength. Incorporating CNTs into these thermoplastic resins requires novel approaches due to high processing temperatures. Hence, in this sudy synthesis of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on polybenzimidazole (PBI) nanofiber substrate and the incorporation of PBI/ CNTs nanocarpets into thermoplastic laminates to enhance electrical and mechanical properties including interfacial strength will be studied. Vertically aligned CNTs will be grown onto the PBI nanofibers to form the nanoprepregs by chemical vapor deposition. These CNT/PBI Nanofibers will be used as interleaves in thermoplastic composites and their mechanical properties will be studies with dynamic mechanical analysis.
