Influence of nucleating agents on crystal structure and properties of polypropylene random copolymer

Polypropylene random copolymer(PPR)is synthesized by co-polymerization of propylene with ethylene or other alpha-olefin monomers. Different kinds of nuleating agents have been introduced into PPR matrix to improve properties such as clarity, Mechanical properties and distortion temperature. In our resent research, PPR samples containing different kinds ofα- and β- nucleating agents were prepared. Crystallinity and crystalline morphology were investigated by Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (PLM). The results showed that different nucleating agent induced different crystalline morphology in PPR. Mechanical properties and distortion temperature of different samples were also studied. It was found that crystallinity and crystalline morphology influenced impact property dramatically. PPR containing β- nucleating agent exhibits excellent heat resisting property due to the special crystalline structure of β- phase.
