Abstract: In this work, Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC)/poly(butylenes adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) blends are prepared at the weight ratio of 50:50 via incorporating ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (EMA-GMA) as reactive compatibilizer using a twin screw extruder. Effect of compatibilizer content on rheological and mechanical properties of PPC/PBAT blends were investigated. Results of rheological measurement for EMA-GMA compatibilized PPC/PBAT blends showed a higher storage modulus and a decreased phase angle (ä) in the van Gurp-Palmen plot. This indicated that there exhibited an improvement of melt strength and miscibility for PPC and PBAT, owing to the reaction between epoxide groups of EMA–GMA and end groups (–OH, –COOH) of PPC and PBAT. The incorporation of EMA-GMA to the binary PPC/PBAT blends was helpful to the significant improvement for tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength. When the content of EMA-GMA was 5 wt%, the tensile strength increased from 5.5MPa to 8.5MPa and elongation at break increased from 24.1% to 159.1%, compared with that of PPC/PBAT blends. Impact strength is also improved from 3.70KJ/m2 to 6.28KJ/m2, increased by 69.7% when the content of EMA-GMA increased from 0 to 10wt%. The enhanced mechanical properties of the EMA-GMA compatibilized PPC/PBAT blends indicated that the interfacial interaction between PPC and PBAT was improved by reactive compatibilization. This will make a very potential degradable material for food packaging application.
