Beside pillared Silica/Clay nanohybrid for catalyst application in chemical industry, a new kind of nanohybrid by silica/montmorillonite (SM) was prepared with the aim of exfoliated single MMT layer structure in polyacrylate clear coat. The SM nanohybrid was grafted with the 3-(trimethoxy silyl)-1-propanol methacrylate (MPS) silane and chain extended with polyacrylate by emulsifier free polymerization. The obtained polyacrylate grafted SM (PA-g-SM) was further dispersed in UV polymerizable monomers such as 1,6 hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and ethoxylated trimethylpropane triacrylate (ETTA) and polymerized by UV for subsequent clear coat application. Results show that all WAXD patterns exhibit exfoliated MMT structure in composites. In addition, with the dosage of MMT ranging from 0% to 1.5% , the pencil hardness for HDDA/PA-g-SM nanocomposite increases to 6H to 9H while that of ETTA increases from 3H to 6H. Both nanocomposites show promising transparency above 90%, suggesting the successful accomplishment of exfoliated MMT in polyacrylate nanocomposites with excellent antiscratch performance.
