Challenges in Up Scaling of Electron Induced Reactive Compounding Processes

The Electron Induced Reactive Compounding was developed as a novel process for reactive modification and mixing of polymers. This process opened the way to create unique polymer materials in the fields of compounds, blends and modified polymers. Using the experiences from the starting discontinuous processing with relatively simple lab equipment a special kneader for a continuous process was developed and homemade in a laboratory scale. The process and material variations developed for the discontinuous kneader were successful transferred in continuous processes with an average throughput of about one kg/h. Taking into account the special conditions of the electron irradiation and safety limits a linear scale up of the lab scale to a semi industrial scale is impossible. The influence of the different parameters will be discussed and scale up solutions for the equipment and the process design will be shown. The advantages and disadvantages of the realized solutions will be described. The challenges for the next scale up step will be discussed.
