Highly transparent and flexible electrodes have been focused recently for remarkable and wearable optoelectronic applications. Hence, a facile method was applied in this work to prepare stretchable silver nanowire (AgNW)/PDMS hybrid electrodes with high transparency and low electric resistance for fabricating the novel elastomeric type electrochromic devices (ECDs) based on ambipolar electrochromic material system, consisting of triarylamine derivatives and heptyl viologen (HV) as anodic and cathodic EC materials, respectively. However, AgNW is very easy to be oxidized under positive bias potential. The oxidation reaction will make AgNW break and lose its electric conductivity gradually. Therefore, the goal of this study is how to successfully combine arylamine based electrochromic materials with AgNW electrode and maintain their stability under applied potential. Through judicious combination of these two parts, the obtained stretchable ECDs based on the AgNW/PDMS electrodes revealed multicolor electrochromic behaviors, and the color also could be tuned from colorless at neutral form to the redox states according to different triarylamine-based materials and apply potential related to their oxidation. Thus, novel stretchable ambipolar ECDs based on highly transparent AgNW/PDMS hybrid electrodes could be successfully fabricated and will be reported in this study.
