Cyclic block copolymer (CBC) is a new class of thermoplastic material with good optical property, low water absorption, good chemical resistance and low density. The CBC thermoplastics can use high throughput polymer replication processes such as injection molding, and hot embossing fabrication process which is ideal for use in polymer microfluidics applications. Front-end microchannel fabrication and the back-end microchip bonding/sealing process are performed to evaluate the fabrication capability and performance of CBC in polymer microfluidics. Two grades of cyclic block copolymers (CBC010 & CBC034) are used in the polymer microfluidics fabrication. And cyclic olefin copolymers (COC) and cyclic olefin polymers (COP) thermoplastics are also evaluated as comparison groups with CBC since both COC and COP have been commonly used in microfluidic chip fabrication. In this conference presentation, hot embossing process, thermal bonding, UV/ozone surface-assisted bonding and solvent bonding process parameters effects to the microchannel resolution, bonding strength as well its optical performance will be reported.
