Three series of electroactive aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) were prepared from 4,4’-bis(p-aminobenzamido)triphenylamine (4), 4,4-bis(p-aminobenzamido)-4”methoxytriphenylamine (MeO-4) and 4,4-bis(p-aminobenzamido)-4”tert-butyltriphenylamine (t-Bu-4), respectively, with tetracarboxylic dianhydrides via two-step polycondensation reactions. The PAIs showed high glass-transition temperatures of 296~355 oC and decomposition temperature in excess of 460 oC. All the PAIs showed reversible electrochemical oxidation processes, accompanied by strong color changes with high contrast ratio. The polymers exhibited increased solubility, lowered oxidation potentials, and enhanced redox stability as compared to their corresponding polyimide analogs. Incorporation of methoxy or tert-butyl substituents on the 4-position of triphenylamine (TPA) pendent phenyl units could hinder the coupling reactions of TPA during electrochemical oxidation.
