Dilute collagen solutions have been used as precursors of highly ordered cholesteric thin films obtained through a multi-step process whose first stage is a complex inhomogeneous flow deposition. The purpose of this initial stage is to pre-align the mesogens and form the paranematic phase that allows a more systematic control of the desired helical axis to be formed in later stages. We present the theory and simulations of this initial flow steps by means of the Landau - de Gennes nematodynamics equations where different flow types are explored using the four roll mill kinematics allowing to evaluate the microstructure response of the precursor solution. We provide a phase diagram indicating the full state of orientation as a function of flow type and intensity. Based on the film formation process requirements, we provide the operational region to which the solutions should be submitted in order to produce highly ordered homogeneous chiral films.
