A series of ionic thermoplastic elastomer based on functionalized ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM) were synthesized by melt grafting technique from citraconic acid(CCA)/EPDM/free radical initiator [2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl peroxy) hexane: T-101]. Ionic thermoplastic elastomers based on functionalized EPDM were prepared by melt mixing from functionalized EPDM and zinc oxide and zinc stearate and/or amino acids, using a Haake Rheocorder. It was found that the density, tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus and tear strength increased in the order of ionic thermoplastic elastomer based on functionalized EPDM with amino acid > ionic thermoplastic elastomer based on functionalized EPDM without amino acid > functionalized EPDM, while compression set was in the opposite order. The ionic thermoplastic elastomer based on functionalized EPDM with amino acid was found to be exhibited the highest mechanical properties, have shown no significant change in mechanical properties and compression set with successive recycling. These results suggest that the ionic thermoplastic elastomer based on funtionalized EPDM has high potential as a new high performance thermoplastic elastomer.
