In many applications, fiber reinforced polymer composites are exposed to solid particle erosion damage which reduces the performance of the material shortening the materials lifespan. In this research, novel thin nanoparticle films or nanopapers for use as a surface protective layer for fiber reinforced polymer composites are manufactured and characterized. Inclusion of these nanopapers through current manufacturing methods has shown increases in solid particle erosion protection of up to 7x and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding protection of 40 dB. Permeability of nanopaper is measured as an indication of difficulty of impregnation.
