This work aims to prepare and utilize highly efficient materials for reducing lime consumption through addition of some novel synthesized flocculants based on chitosan and polyacrylamide-co-acrylic acid (PAAm) to beet juice during its purification, in comparison with the conventional one (Praestol®). These composites were prepared via UV irradiation, through free radical copolymerization technique, using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) and glutaraldehyde (GA) as an initiator and a crosslinker, respectively. All the prepared materials were characterized using different analytical tools such as: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), x-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Moreover, utilization of the prepared composites as novel flocculants in beet juice purification technique was examined and evaluated relative to the traditional one. The analyzed data confirmed that some novel composites were successfully prepared through copolymerization and blending between chitosan and (PAAm). The assessment of the prepared materials as flocculent revealed that some chitosan based copolymers could be used in the beet sugar industry with high efficiency and low dose in comparison with the traditional one.
