Preparation and Characterizations of Eucommia Ulmoides Gum/Polypropylene or Polyolefin Elastomer Thermoplastic Vulcanizate

Abstract: Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) is a natural polymer material which has many excellent properties, such as good insulation properties, acid and alkali resistance. EUG is of the rubber - plastic duality and there have abundant natural resources in China. Compared with the normal rubber, it is very hard at the room temperature, it also has a low melting point and excellent low-temperature plasticity. Compared with the plastic, not only has it high toughness, but there is a good compatibility with other rubber and plastic materials. In this research, we adapt the dynamic vulcanization method to prepare the thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV) of EUG/polypropylene (PP) and EUG/polyolefin elastomer (POE) blend. Systematic study of the influence of the different EUG with PP or with POE ratio and effect of the copies of sulfur content on TPV mechanical properties, and the refined and aging properties of TPV is involved. In the EUG/PP blend system, EUG has a great influence on the tensile strength, hardness and melt index, the impact strength has been improved considerably. When the ratio of EUG/PP in TPV is 7:3, the impact strength is nearly three times of the sample which the ratio of EUG/PP is 3:7. The results of DSC and polarizing microscope analysis also show that the addition of EUG can affect on the crystallization of PP. When the 40 copies of EUG was added, a maximum value of the crystallinity is 41.2%.By thermo-gravimetric analysis, the increase of the content of EUG is good for keeping thermal stability of TPV. In the EUG/POE blend system, with the increase of EUG content, the tensile strength of the TPV is increased and then reduced, and the elongation at break is keep falling.It can also lead to decrease of energy storage modulus of TPV, and the loss factor changes exhibit the inverse tend
