The synthesis and characterization of novel thermoplastic elastomer with high polarity

In this study, we prepared novel thermoplastic elastomer using various polymerization. We designed thermoplastic elastomer which has poly (ethylene-ter-1-hexene-ter-divinylbenzene) (PEHV) as a soft segment and polyacrylonitrlie (PAN) as a hard segment. We copolymerized PEHV using rac-ethylenebis (indenyl) zirconiumdichloride/diethylanilium tetrakis (petafluoro-phenyl) Borate complex/tri-iso-butylaluminium catalyst system. We modified the vinyl group in the PEHV to give bromine group which will act as an initiating site during the atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The graft copolymerization of PEHV-g-Br with acrylonitrile was conducted using ATRP method. The structure of the copolymers was characterized by FT-IR and H1-NMR. We also investigated the morphological properties of PEHV-g-PAN by SEM. Keywords: Thermoplastic elastomer, Metallocene polymerization, ATRP, Graft copolymer
