Abstract Colour plays an important role in plastic manufacturing industry. Colour Master batches are made in several forms depending on the aesthetic required for the type of plastic it is being made for. For colouration of any plastic product either dyes or pigments are used. Both have its own advantages and disadvantages. A possible solution of this problem has been found by an easy process by combining organic dyes with layered natural or synthetic clays. This papers presents use of a new class of nanocolournats or nanopigment or PlanoColours for colouration of polymeric films and fibers. These combine the advantages of dyes with those of pigments and are more stable without increase in the particle size of dyes. The inspiration for this class of nanocolorants are the Maya Blue (MB) pigments that have attracted considerable interest in the past few years. This opens the way to the low-cost engineering of heavy metal free nonhazardous pigment powders based on indigoid and other dyes.Maya Blue is a famous artificial pigment widely used in murals, pottery and sculptures by the ancient Mayas and other people in Mesoamerica. The pigment, whose hue ranges from bright turquoise to dark greenish blue, exhibits a remarkable stability, being unaffected by the attack of acids, alkalis, oxidants, reducing agents, organic solvents, as well as painting ability, good UV, oxygen and thermal stability. Clay-dye nanocolourant pigment was prepared by using Rhodamine dyes and MMT clay. Nanopigment was characterised by TGA, computer colour matching system, XRD, SEM. It was further incorporated in polymer for preparation of coloured master batches on a twin screw extruder. The coloured master batch was used to prepare fims and fibers and different properties sucand different properties such as thermal stability, UV stability, mechanical properties etc. of these samples were evaluated.
