The effect of NIR irradiation and temperature on the release of a water-soluble fluorescent dye (calcein) from dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposome was investigated when liposome was mixed with gold nanoparticle (GNP) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-butylmethacrylate)(PNIPAM-BMA). The release from only liposome happened when the temperature is higher than the phase transition temperature of liposome membrane (PTT, 41 oC). Under the NIR irradiation, DPPC liposome mixed with GNP released due to the photo-thermally induced phase transition of liposome membrane. While liposome was mixed with GNP and PNIPAM-BMA, the release took place at 37 oC because of the polymer. Meanwhile, the two triggered releases of DPPC liposome mixed with GNP and PNIPAM-BMA under NIR irradiation were due to the thermal contraction of copolymer and the phase transition of the liposome membrane.
