We demonstrate the alternating current (AC) electric field-induced aligned multi walled carbon nanotube networks in melt mixed polypropylene nanocomposites. To the author’s knowledge, we are the first to report the electric field-induced alignment in a molten thermoplastic polymer. Pristine multi walled carbon nanotubes were melt mixed with a polypropylene resin using an internal mixer. In situ optical microscopy confirmed the network formation by the electric field. The interaction forces between the tubes and the external electric field are a consequence of electric dipole moments induced on the tubes, thus inducing additional tube-tube interactions. Electric measurements also verified the electric field induced network. Electric conductivity was increased by three orders of magnitude along the direction of the tube alignment.
