The commercial-grade poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) fiber is produced by using fuming sulfuric acid as solvent. Lots of polymer researchers have been focusing on designing organo-soluble para-aramids due to the difficulty in handling the sulfuric acid based spinning system. Poly(2-cyano-p-phenylene terephthalamide) (CY-PPTA) has proved as a good candidate for this, which is soluble in several organic solvent systems such as N,N-dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride (DMAc/LiCl) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidon/calcium chloride (NMP/CaCl2). In this study, the physical and rheological properties of CY-PPTA solutions in DMAc or NMP were evaluated in terms of content of metal salts to specify the respective role of each metal salts in the solution dope. The solubility of CY-PPTA in the dilute solutions will be systematically discussed in terms of the metal salt content. In addition, temperature dependence of physical properties of CY-PPTA solutions will be examined with different combination of solvents and metal salts. Keywords: CY-PPTA, PPTA, liquid crystalline polymer, rheology
