This work study the melt rheology and fiber spinnability of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers with different ethylene content which are good in biocompatibility but difficult in melt spinning. Three EVOH copolymers with different ethylene content (EV-32, EV-38 and EV-44) were used to evaluate the influence of the ratio of ethylene to vinyl alcohol on melt spinnability. The results show that the thermal stability exhibits an increasing order: EV-32 < EV-38 < EV-44. The viscosity shows the following order: EV-32 > EV-38 > EV-44. EV-44 showed higher flow activation energy than EV-32 and EV-38, indicating EV-44 has higher temperature sensitivity than EV-32 and EV-38. Besides, the shear thinning behavior for EV-32 and EV-38 is greater than EV-44. The pellets of EV-32, EV-38 and EV-44 were melt-spun and EV-44 showed good spinnability without any fuming and break-up of spin-line. The three as-spun fibers have have the tensile stress (strain(%) at break point) being 9.3 (205.2 %), 9.1 (202.0 %) and 10.2 (180.2 %) cN/tex, for EV-32, EV-38 and EV-44, respectively; confirming again the EV-44 can be seen as a excellent candidate for melt-spinning.
