Graphene oxide(GO) was prepared by oxidizing graphite powder via modified Hummers’ method. After oxidation, GO was treated through base-wash process to remove the strongly-bound oxidative debris from the surface of GO. The prepared GO was modified by a 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane(MPTMS) silane coupling agent to introduce free radical polymerizable methacrylate groups on GO surface to make GO-MPTMS. The GO-MPTMS was used as fillers in emulsion polymerization to make GO-MPTMS/PMMA nanocomposite. We used fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) to characterize structures of modified GO surface. We also used differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and scanning electron microscope(SEM) to measure physical property and morphology of GO-MPTMS/PMMA nanocomposite.
