The continued potential use for bio-based polymers such as Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in plastic packaging materials depends on the improvements of its mechanical and barrier properties. In the present work, we have shown through the process of melt blending that the addition of layered nanomaterials such as Nanoclays, Boron Nitride, Graphene and Molybdenum-Disfulide at loading levels from 0.02 % to 3% can improve both the mechanical and oxygen barrier properties of the neat PLA polymer.
