The range of properties attainable for polymer/clay aerogels produced via a freeze drying process from aqueous suspensions has been well described over the past decade. Low flammability, high absorbancy, and mechanical properties ranging from brittle to elastomeric/tough have been demonstrated. Both standard petrochemical and bio-based polymers, and a range of clays (or none) have also been evaluated. The future for such materials will be discussed in this paper.
