The demand for biobased polymers is growing rapidly. However, due to production processes consisting of several batch processes, biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) still have the potential for an increased commercially exploitation. In order to overcome these problems, twelve partners launched the InnoREX project in December 2013. This FP7 EU-project aims at the continuous, highly precise, metal-free polymerization of PLA using alternative energies for reactive extrusion. In this presentation the main innovations within the project, the scientific ideas behind the project approach and selected project results from several partners of the consortium will be shown. Issues of microwave incorporation and the performance of organic catalysts will be broached, as well as the capability of online spectroscopy for polymerisations in twin screw compounders will be demonstrated. In this talk the latest results in terms of alternative energy incorporation into twin screw extruders will be covered, scalable concepts for the incorporation of microwaves in extruder of every size will be introduced. Further latest outcomes from inline analytics within the processing length of the extruder will be shown. Here we will demonstrate that it is well possible to measure NIR spectra, molecular weight and of course composition of the reaction mixture over the whole processing length of the extruder. Completed by latest results of the reaction kinetics of metal free catalysed PLA polymerisation this talk covers a wide overview about the European InnoREX project.
