The fiber industry has long since consisted of two dominant polymers, polyester and polyamide, which are utilized today in a variety of applications. As the demand and consumption has grown year after year, so has the desire and appreciation to reclaim and reuse what was once discarded in the process. Unifi Inc. (Unifi), a leading fiber producer in North America, saw the importance of recycling and sustainability and has since made a full commitment to the cause. Unifi constructed a technologically advanced recycling facility that converts its own manufacturing waste and a variety of other downstream waste sources (fiber, PET bottles, fabrics, films, etc.) into 1st Quality recycled chips and later filament fiber. Unifi began exploration in rPET recycling in 2006 and has since developed a market recognized brand called “Repreve”. The presentation will: outline the filament fiber market and provide a general understanding of plastics recycling; discuss techniques focusing on thermo-mechanical recycling; provide the challenges and key experiences in Unifi’s development of “Repreve”; Discuss closed loops examples in PET; share success stories; challenge the audience with the opportunities and the need for further research and development.
