Solid phase polymer processing unlocks the potential of molecular orientation to achieve enhanced and tailored physical properties for given applications. Here we discuss the die drawing process as a route to significantly enhancing and controlling a single or combination of properties, including Young’s Modulus, Tensile and Yield Strength, Density and shape memory effects at acceptable commercial production rates. Example products are demonstrated in terms of shape memory devices for tissue fixation (with controlled property levels such as stiffness and recovery stress levels), novel construction materials (with controlled density and stiffness properties) and machining time and waste reduction processing of bearing surfaces.
