An advanced process is developed by combining the features of conventional and rapid solvent extraction methods in production of monoliths of supercritically dried silica aerogels. The process allows production of silica aerogel monoliths in less than half a day with properties equivalent to those obtained with conventional processes, which usually take between 3-7 days. The advanced process utilizes a one-pot synthesis process with successive steps of aging, washing, and supercritical drying in a newly designed multi-injection stainless steel reactor. The physical and structural properties aerogels, analyzed by nitrogen sorption, helium pyconometry, X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and contact angle reveal that the aerogel monoliths are equivalent to those reported in literature.
