Abstract Design and development of orthotic parts is a subject of study since long time. Orthotic hinge joint is an important part of such devices and these should be light in weight. Light weight metals like titanium and aluminium are already in use for orthotic devices. The newest development in this field is based on the use of advance polymer composites and is the basis of present work. Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene-clay blends and its nano-composites are prepared using direct melt compounding with different loading levels of (ABS) nanoclay (Cloisite 30B) in a twin screw extruder and have been subjected to torsional and axial load for their application as orthotic hinge joints. Resilience, toughness and ductility have been quantified for all the blends and nanocomposites. Torque values of PC/ABS blends and its nanocomposites are observed under torsion (10-90⁰) and compared with that of neat PC & ABS. Both modulus of elasticity and rigidity are found to improve in presence of ABS & nanoclay. Hinge joints made out of commercially available nylon and PC/ABS blend were prepared and evaluated for the performance by applying compressive and dynamic load. Hinge joint made out of PC/ABS blend and its nano-composites is further subjected to torsional load and dynamic load using a testing rig to check the fatigue performance of the hinge joint.Field trials were carried out and the performance of the joints made out of PC/ABS blends were found satisfactory. Key words: Hinge Joint, Polycarbonate, Torsion.
