Pre-treatment of wood chips with electron irradiation results in significant property changes for the resulting mechanical pulp (TMP). Interesting conclusions for the application of such mechanical pulps can be drawn not only from the energy savings during TMP refining, but also from the resulting pulp and fiber network properties. The microtribologic behavior of such fibre networks with focus on surface topography, micro friction, and viscoelastic properties will be discussed depending on irradiation dose and wood species. The materials were tested with the two INNOWEP systems USTŪ and TraceITŪ.
