Thermoplastic Elastomers are very important materials in modern medical engineering. One typical application is for medical tubing. Currently, this product is made of plasticized PVC. However, this material type is no longer state of the art according to current knowledge because of the toxicological concerns stemming from the plasticizer currently used in PVC-P. Therefore, there is a growing demand for substitution of vinyl based medical tubings. Thermoplastic styrenic elastomers (TPS) could be used as an alternative material. But in contrast to PVC-P, the viscoelastic properties of TPS along with its influence on performance of the tubing are not yet known sufficiently. Our contribution describes the development of a testing method for the characterization of the viscoelastic properties of tube shaped samples by using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Different TPS materials for medical applications are characterized and compared to the properties obtained on tubes made of PVC-P. In contrast to PVC-P, the Shore hardness of TPS does not reflect the viscoelastic behavior of the material and the relevant properties in application. When using DMA on the tube shaped final product it was possible to characterize several TPS materials. Thereby useful correlation with important performance criteria of the corresponding tubes can be yield. Finally, an attempt is made to correlate the results with the practical application of the tubes in peristaltic pumps of infusion systems.
