Multifunctional polyamide composite films attractive for flexible packaging applications

In this study, we present a new approach to simultaneously improve the mechanical properties, UV-stability and oxygen barrier performance of multi-layered films by integrating polyamide-based composite layer. The films comprised of PA composite exhibit excellent transparency at about 90 μm thickness, UV-resistance in the range of 34%-46% with respect to the control film (containing neat PA) depending on the multilayered structures. Furthermore, the integration of PA composite layer improves the tensile performance in both machine and transverse directions. Besides mechanical and UV protection, in some instance it is possible to achieve good oxygen barrier performance. The oxygen permeability can be in the range of 0.004 ml-mm/m2.day which makes it attractive for packaging applications.
