Biodegradable Plastics: Is a solution or Problem

P RAMESH BABU (1)*

Plastics are integral part of modern society and often make the impossible possible. However, the recalcitrant nature of fossil-based plastics coupled with a single-use throwaway culture release them into the environment results in negative environmental consequences. Bioplastics emerging as an alternative to fossil-based plastics in a number of applications, however several challenges have to be addressed before bioplastics can be widely adopted and meet the economic and environmental standards that will justify their wider use. The demands are more severe for replacing the fossil-based plastics with bio/biodegradable plastics and only few polymers succeed to meet these requirements. In this talk, I will address our on-going work in designing the biodegradable polymer composites that can degrade in multiple environments and approaches for upscaling the recycled bioplastics
