Benchmark Study of The Weathering of Engineering Resins

Alkarri Saleh (1)*

(1) SABIC - Riyadh - SaudiArabia

This study provides a benchmark for outdoor weathering data for a range of Engineering Thermoplastics. The materials were exposed for three years at three outdoor weathering sites: (1) Miami (Florida), (2) Phoenix (Arizona), and (3) Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The site in Riyadh is a new facility for outdoor weathering, and different from other sites because the region is drier, hotter, and more dusty. Further, there was no study comparing the actual weathering results of several outdoor sites with the simulated / accelerated weathering results across a range of materials and formulations. This was particularly important in order to validate accelerated weathering results with the actual outdoor behavior in the environment of the Middle East. The data include color shifts, 60° gloss, erosion, tensile properties, and Charpy impact as well as haze and transmission for transparent samples. The data are to provide baseline information on the performance of these model formulations, show any differences among the sites, and show correlation to accelerated weathering tests.
