Adhesion and de-adhesion are opposite phenomena governed by their respective inherent interfacial energetics. The interfacial energetics of the polymeric resin, the incorporated micro/nano reinforcements and the substrates, are the decisive attributes with respect to the formation of physical/chemical affinity or repellency, respectively. Adhesion science and technology have been developed in the last half a century to the point where a variety of structures made of metallic as well as polymer materials are bonded. Structural thermoset adhesives are typified by low toughness due to its high crosslinking density. To remedy this shortcoming, by the nano way, incorporation of nanoparticles has been shown to significantly enhance the adhesives toughness due to modification of the fracture mechanisms in the nanoscale. To obtain repellent and self-cleaning surfaces and reduced ice adhesion, the surface characteristics should meet superhydrophobic characteristics as opposed to the case of enhanced adhesion where hydrophilicity is a must. A variety of surface treatments based on hydrophobic polymers have been offered. However, none of them demonstrated superhydrophobicity. Bio mimicry of the Lotus leaf, which exhibits superhydrophobic behavior, led to the understanding that hydrophobic chemistry combined with the nano way- introduction of nano-roughness is the required combination to achieve highly repellent surfaces. The presentation will analyze and describe the nano way science to enhance adhesion with respect to bonding of metals by epoxy adhesives. Furthermore, the nano way science of de-adhesion based on nano-roughness and hydrophobic chemistry will be discussed with emphasis on water repellency and reduction of ice adhesion.
